Mt. Hood White River Glacier Ice Cave traps SB

4pm today. One boarder trapped and all others safe. Rescue in process but digging may not start until morning. Head lines call it a cave but KOMO reports Sherif saying it might have been a crevasse, which sounds more plausible. Hoping for a safe return for that broader and the rescue crew!

Condolences to the victim's family and friends.

From the news photos, it appears that this was a crevasse (caused by glacial movement) not an ice cave (caused by melting by water or air flow).

Taking dramatic pictures of climbers and skiers among seracs and crevasses is a venerable Northwest tradition. But it has risks.
