Kautz Glacier Calve Photos 3/30/13 was created by Erik Henne
As we were ascending the Wilson Glacier on Saturday March 30th a large chunk of the Kautz Glacier calved off at 2:20 and ran onto the Wilson Glacier, about 2000 feet vertical change. I was lucky enough to be in position to capture a few photos. The run out crossed ski tracks of a party that skied across the glacier at about 11:30am.

Great shots.

That was pretty gnarly. I was further down and caught it on my gopro, but it's pretty hard to see. Anyone who was in that path would of had zero chance of survival.

Holy crap, the Kautz has been active this year. I skied down the Finger right around 11:30 and opted to ski directly down the Nisqually rather than over toward the Turtle.

Wow. We saw a similar calving in a similar spot late in the afternoon on sunday. We were way lower by that point so I am happy someone got a shot up close. Good thing the Kautz calves onto the Wilson and not where we were riding....powerful stuff.

We almost got taken out by this exact same thing in January. Two members of our team were bombarded with serac debris for about five minutes straight while climbing a technical pitch 1/3 way up the face. Miraculously all of the larger chunks broke into smaller chunks before they got to us and only caused contusions and broken gear (and some skid marks).
