Spring / Volcano Skis - Suggestions was created by AlpinWeiss
I'm looking for a pair of sticks for spring skiing and wanted to see what folks thought of the latest crop. I'm willing to haul a little more weight for performance than the ultra-lightweight setups (my last pair of Baker Superlights were too light for me)

Here's what I'm basically looking for:

Fairly Lightweight
90-96mm underfoot (for gloppy spring snow)
Stiff enough for decent edge hold on hardpack
Tip Rocker, flat tail

Right now I'm considering:
- Volkl Nanuq
- Voile Vector
- LaSportiva LoFive (hard to find at retailers)

Have folks skied these skis? Any opinions?

Are there other skis that I should be looking at?

Heard good things about the Dynastar Cham series. Check out Cham 97. Standard and lightweight models available.

The Cham 107 is on my short list.

The old reliable Vokl Explosive
95 underfoot 120 in the tip stiff flex powder ski
turns on a dime for chutes and trees
handles speed most excelently for letting them run
and will not be pushed around by adverse conditions
series retired but plenty of old ones out there
Mine are 180's mounted with dynafits and still skiing and touring nicely

How about the Sportiva GT?  I've got a pair that I used exclusively last season in the NE, but have not really used them much this year in the PNW, except for the days without much new snow.  They are super light, but I have not had a issue with them being TOO light, they are 89mm at the wasit (if I remember correctly).

Just an idea.

Second this.
Have a look at the Cham 97 High Mountain( the lightweight version).
They have flat tails= good for kick turns and ski-mountaineering.
They have holes in tails and tips( covered by clever plastic gizmo)..this is for their custom skins and has the added benefit for crevasse rescue and sled making.
They are surprisingly damp for a lightweight ski.
Pintail design good for mush( keeps tips up)
Fat tip good for mush.
Camber and side-cut good for hardpack/corn.

When choosing a spring ski, never forget ( as many do) that we don't go from powder to hardpack/corn....we go from powder to mush season (which can last two months)and then to hardpack and corn.

A versatile PNW spring ski, IMO should be able to handle the mush season as well as the corn season.

PNWBrit( Banned)just got a pair as did several other buddies and I'm quite jealous frankly.
He bought them @ Whistler Backcountry in Whistler(duh) for I think $450 Canadian = screaming deal.

Also heard good things about the Nanuq.

Don't be jealous. Although not the HM, still looks like a good deal, and probably better edge hold and crud busting:
