Craig Hill story (TNT) about Meany ski area was created by Lowell_Skoog
A couple months ago, Craig Hill of the Tacoma News Tribune called me for a story about local ski areas celebrating anniversaries this year (including Stevens, Snoqualmie, Crystal and others). We talked about the introduction of rope tows 75 years ago, and I mentioned that the Mountaineers Meany Lodge near Stampede Pass still offers the "classic rope tow experience." Craig contacted the Mountaineers and arranged to visit the lodge to see for himself.

The News Tribune published his story last weekend, and the online version is really good. The videos don't seem to work on my Windows machine running Firefox, but they play just fine on my iPad. Maybe they'll work for you. Here's the link:

Congrats to Jim Fahey, Andy Smith, Art Freeman and Linda Harkness of the Mountaineers for showing off this quirky gem of a ski area. May it remain small and friendly for another 75 years.

Great article thanks for sharing, Lowell. Can't get the videos to load on either IE or FF (Windows) and can't find any other videos on TNT as reference points. Guess I'll try later on a Mac.

I was in the Mountaineers when I was younger but somehow I never made it up there to Meany, despite many trips to the lodges at Stevens or Baker. The article's definitely piqued my interest. Wonder if Meany will see a spike in time travel applicants courtesy of Craig's article?

Lord knows I have enough beater ski clothes at my disposal, such that a few carbon stripes from the Mach might deliver the welcome death blow that finally spurs me to throw that thing away :)

I think the videos may be formatted to run on QuickTime, so you may have better luck on a Mac.

You might also enjoy this earlier story by Craig Hill about skiing on the smaller hills in Eastern Washington, especially in light of your recent trip to Loup Loup:
