Chains for Mt Baker? was created by wooley12
Doing an Alpental-Mission R-Mt Baker road/ski trip this week. Do I need to carry chains for my '02 Subaru Outback. Know I shouldn't need them to go in the snow but what will the DOT man say? Too busy packing to search, Thanks.

DOT doesn't check AWD cars. The highway closes before an AWD car with good tires can get stopped by snow.

One time all cars, including AWD, were being stopped by WSP on Hwy 2 to check for chains or that chains were at least being carried (AWD).

There are places where carrying chains is required in the winter, i.e, 410 to Crystal. Don't know about Hwy 542 as I rarely go there.

Washington state law requires you to carry chains Nov - Apr on all mountain routes, even with AWD/4WD. Enforcement maybe more of an extra ticket if you get stuck or crash than WSP pulling you over and asking to see your chains. I think the fine is substantial, not just slap on the wrist.
