FOAC Decision Making Workshop this Wednesday was created by NWAC
Join us for an evening with Margaret Wheeler, IFMGA mountain guide, avalanche instructor, and all around fun person.
Have you ever been part of a group decision process that jumped the rails? People heading off in different directions, the group splintering into factions, or plodding along disgruntled, or both…
We know from experience that group dynamics in the backcountry can create some of our best experiences in the mountains – those days when things click, the snow is epic, and we make good decisions together. But we also know that group dynamics can magnify our levels of risk, skew our perception of consequence, and render us blind to the world around us. What makes a group function well together? And what makes it fall apart?
In this three-hour interactive workshop, we will examine the ways in which effective group decision-making occurs, drawing on outside research from other risk-focused industries. We will then seek to apply these themes in the complex and often-chaotic environment of backcountry decision making. We’ll investigate tools to deal with some of the core issues: How do we manage the powerful influence of our own human dynamics when they are complex, unpredictable, and different almost every time? How can we use the resources in our backcountry groups to evaluate our decision-making in real time? What are the cultural habits and interpersonal skills that support good group decision-making?
Both professionals and recreational skiers/riders are encouraged to attend this session.
Session Details:
