I'm glad I finally got to read this. Huge kudos to the NYT for putting this together. The narrative in addition to the visuals accompanying it do a fantastic job of telling the story. I don't know any of the people involved but I do remember the day.

My jaw dropped when I watched the included video where the guy pulls his beacon OUT of his pack to begin the search. How do you go in the backcountry and not wear your beacon on your body??

This is a brilliant piece of journalism. I wouldn't be surprised if this wins the NY Times award(s). I hope everyone who heads out into the backcountry sees this.
