AT boot rocker and foot pain was created by joecat2
I'm considering buying an AT boot that has more rocker than usual such as the Dynafit Performance or LaSportiva Spitfire. I've heard the rocker, which holds your first(big)toe up a bit instead of flat, can cause pain in the first toe joint after several hours of wear that is unlikely to happen with a flatter soled boot.

Anyone have experience with both rockered and flat soled boots, particularly if they have arthritis in their toes?

Thanks, Joe

I have the TLT5 Mountain, which differs only in cuff material (and in the US, liner available) from the Performance.  The rocker on the TLT5 is no more pronounced than on the Dynafit Zzero 4s, Zeros 3s, and Zzeus (which I also have) and is not as pronounced as on my Scarpa tele boots.  The big difference with the TLT5 is that it is shorter for a given size (therefore rocker less noticeable), and it has a big toe box (which is nice, but can cause a little foot shifting when you wear the liner out).  I have no experience with the Spitfire.  I don't have arthritis in my toes, but I have had a problem with foot pain.  One thing to consider with the TLT5 and the Dynafit tech bindings is ramp angle which becomes more noticeable with the shorter boot.  I know some people are putting shims under the toe piece to reduce ramp angle.  Some, including me (at times), find the foreward lean on the TLT5 a bit much (accentuated by ramp angle) , but the newer editions allow for more choices.  I use a plastic sleeve to prevent the lean from locking in on long downhill descents that are low angle.

I have AT skied various Scarpa boots over the years.  I currently use the Maestrale for a couple years.  I have large (13) feet fit with space for orthotics and big and small toe problems.

The fact that the sole of the boot has a curvature doesn't mean that the interior of the boot does. As far as I can tell, the portion of my TLT5P's from the metatarsal heads forward is just as flat as the same area in my Lange RS 130's.

Thanks for the input guys. I plan to see a podiatrist and measure the inside of different ski boots for upward curve in the toe area. My Garmont Dynamites which have visible rocker on the outside are flat inside. (checked with a flat steel bar)
