Hyak - am I kidding myself? was created by ErikT
Not sure I have the negotiating capital necessary to arrange a visit to Stevens tomorrow morning for some Thanksgiving turns. Would driving to Hyak just be one of those horrendous mariatial decisions where I'm paying for the unecessary early alarm and drive for no skiing? Alpy telemetry claims 22", whereas Hyak claims 10". They're supposed to get another 5-9" today....

Summit West is the first area to become skiable. Unfortunately, unless it snows all day and night, it is not looking very good. The rains of the last few days have really dropped the little snowpack we had. Currently the base at west is probably 6-8 inches, with plenty of ground exposed. It is currently snowing, but needs at least a foot and probably more like two feet of new snow to cover the ground well enough for skiing. Currently Hyak has less than an inch on the ground at the parking lot level.

Being that I left Hyak this morning for work I would comfortably say I have around 6" on the ground at my house (2,900') but nothing I would attempt to ski or snowboard in. It was snowing good when I left at 7am and they expect 2-8" today and another 3" tonight (maybe) so tomorrow might be doable. I would suggest as already mentioned to do West first, or maybe even Central. There was ZERO brush cutting this year at Hyak so early snow will have lots of brush sticking through.

Just an FYI, but West opens first because the ground there is primarily grass and heather, so they can operate on a shallower base. Alpental is much, uhm, "bumpier" from all the talus and the company needs/wants a deeper base before opening.
