Tire sizing advice was created by haggis
OK so its barely TAY related but I had to buy a new car. Tires on it are 225/65/17. I have a set of barely used 225/60/17 snow tires, studded unfortunately but they will grip just fine. If I can get some steel rims with the right BCD for my wheel hub, will these work? Just a wee bitty confused.

That should be close enough not to mess anything up. Width is the same, but the tire is shorter. Your speedometer will be off, use a calculator like this to figure out by how much.

The difference in the tire is that the sidewall on the 60 is 5.3" high from the rim to the top of the tread and the 65 is 5.75". So a difference just below a half inch.
The obvious is that this will throw off the spedometer speed and may effect the anti lock brake system if there is one. That may nullify your warranty.

It depends on on the vehicle (not sure what you bought?)....On an all wheel drive vehicle as a Subaru forester it may not be a good idea since the gearing ratio is intended for the larger tire and increasing revolutions with a smaller diameter tire may effect differentials and drivelines.
But it may behoove to check in with a tire shop on that question.

You won't have issues as serious as Joedabaker is concerned about.

Yes, you're speedo will be off but without actually crunching the numbers I bet it is less than 10% which is the maximum allowable by the SAE standards. In addition, it will be overreporting i.e. When you are actually going 55mph it might indicate 60mph. The issues with the drivetrain will be all the same issues you would have if you increased your average speed by the amount that your speedo is off by and maintained your current actual speeds. If you drive it to the same value on your speed then you'll be going slower than you were before and your driveline issues will not change.

As for the ABS as long as all of your tires match in size then you won't have any issues. The ABS system is looking for differences in tire speed between the 4 corners and has no way to compare it to actual vehicle speed unless you are driving something cutting edge that is using GPS as part of the system for predictive cruise, etc. I'm not aware of anything in the passenger car industry that is tying that in with vehicle diagnostics.

The biggest difference is that I'd be concerned about is that you'll lose almost 1/2" of ground clearance.

This might be a good time for YMMV. :D
