Definitely sad news.
I was up with my daughters on a backpacking trip at Moose Lake and Grand pass when I met a fellow skier. She let me know of the A frame and that it had been destroyed.
I felt sad. I'm new to the area and had vaguely heard something about it. Sad I will never get to have the experience.
I'm all for supporting whatever efforts there are to help improve access while respecting wilderness.

Area is still open for same experience......just bring lightweight tent...... A Frame had no stove!... Just saying????
Also have you considered Hantavirus risk.?

Numerous deaths reported in Yosemite National Park this year and the disease is in WA and spreading.
Old structures such as this pose a risk. Rodent droppings carry the disease.
RonJ once had "rights" on an old cabin in Morse Creek Drainage near Crystal. I helped cut some wood and do some winter prep but was too scared to sleep in it and have mice running over my head and inhaling poop spores.
Unless hut is well kept and sanitary.....I'd much prefer a lightweight tent.

Good point. The mountains are still there, which is great. It would be fun to have some possible hut tours in the Olympics though.

I'll take my risks in the cabin and at the very least I'd at least like the option. Should all cabins be torn down because of Hantavirus? Tearing down a historical cabin is criminal to me and shouldn't be a decision made on a whim by a few in the park service.
This is just one more step in ONP's progression towards closing the park's gates. Cabin or tent, if you try to do an overnight trip from Hurricane Ridge in the winter I guarantee far more roadblocks than you anticipate. If you've been following any of StormKing's posts, you'd know that the current park administration is there to keep you out and settling for a lightweight tent versus a shelter won't help access the Hurricane Ridge Backcountry.

No all cabins shouldn't be torn down due to Hantavirus.... they need to be tested if they are not maintained and full of rodent poop and those that do either cleaned( if that's possible) or torn down. I'm just giving you an alternate reason to think about. The latest Hantavirus scare in YNP is a pretty serious situation.....somebody is going to get sued....big time! 8 cases, 3 deaths! If cabin is suspected to be infected, you don't get the option to take the risk..NPS would not allow you to have an option to contract a deadly disease... that is not logical.
Not sure NPS does anything on a whim...seems to have been their plan for a long time,. Stop charging and taking reservations, remove from map, remove stove, take out before its noticed. You are suggesting they need approval form the public. Not sure it works that way. Perhaps it was in their master plan... Somebody needs to get a copy and start reading. FOIA can be used.
Remember when they were wanting to take away Camp 4( the famous climbers camp at YNP). It was stopped by a climber's coalition getting Camp 4 designated as an official historic monument. I would suggest that BC skiers think about doing something the same for any cabin/structure they hold dear and fear losing! Lot of information on the web about that.
Agree, overnights at ONP, even waterhole is a big problem due to weekday closures but still possible for a weekend overnight.

I started another thread about the same topic, but are there any groups like that in WA already?
