So, question, anyone? What is the best outdoor companion? Are Labs as good as a Husky/Wolf=Hybrid/Malamute/?? for alpine, deep snow, and severe conditions? Labs are sure with about everything else; minus their OCD and hyperness!! Been out with Lab Mixes and Setter Mixers(which I adore), but am unsure on a type of dog that would be well suited towards winter backcountry/skiing/camping, backpacking, kayaking, and an aggressive lifestyle. Looking for a companion, so taking my time

Sorry for your loss man, I know they're hard to handle and having another friend that close probably won't happen.

They hate water, won't go into water and are almost cat like in their hatred of it. They are affectionate in their own way but not effusive like a lab and can be a bit aloof...not a cuddly dog.
I'd get another if the wife would let me as I love the breed and their anti-social behavior but I wouldn't recommend them as a "buddy " dog and certainly not if you like water sports.

Thanks for the info, Scotsman! So, looks like Huskies are off my list. I love the water too much, and have had too many experiences chasing down buddies dogs that saw or smelled critters in the BC. One in particular, went chasing down a herd of Bighorn Sheep on the side of a mountain, and we spent many hours reeling her back in. They are an incredible breed, though!bcjunkie... I have a Siberian husky. They are perfectly adapted for snow and bc skiing and he's a very playful and intelligent dog but they have their drawbacks. Their prey instinct is so predominant that they can and will disappear for hours if they get a whiff of something. I can only really let him off the leash in the BC and this is is common to the breed. They can't be trusted not to bugger off.
