Squak Glacier Question was created by ShailCaesar!
Thinking of camping at Crag View on Saturday, with an eye to gaining the crevasse at 8800 ft as my high point. My question: how crevassed is it from Crag View up to that point? Thanks in advance!

On 9/1 I ascended to 8160ft from Crag View -- crossed one small crevasse, skirted a few others.

Easy skinning? Ski crampons not needed? Were you roped up?

Wore harness and rescue gear, carried rope, but did not rope up. Carried but did not use ski and boot crampons. I talked to Amar who turned around at ~8600 on Sept 1 -- the point at which the snow surface became hard frozen and would have been less fun skiing.

Odd note: Watch out for quicksand in the area at the top of Crag view -- You have to walk on the ground to transfer from the snowfields below the Squak onto the glacier itself and there are pockets of quicksand in that area -- not enough to swallow you -- but enough to make a gunky mess.

Its come to my attention (through reading) that I'm foolish to step onto any glacier by myself. Is it worth it to hike up to Crag View to ski the snowfields below it? Or is there a reasonable risk in hiking a little bit above Crag View (3-500ft)? Or should I just take the skis for a "walk" at Artist Point/Coleman Pinnacle area? Obsessed with getting higher on the Mountain (6800 ft on the north side in mid July was the highest I've been) but part of me just wants to get some quick September turns in and then take a break til late October (getting tired :)) Any advice from anyone would be welcome, thanks!
