Sholes Glacier Question was created by iluka
Thinking of heading up to Baker in the coming days and was curious as to whether it's necessary to rope up on the Sholes Glacier. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I never have roped there, it seems benign. But, it is a glacier, so YMMV, caveat emptor, etc.
In the middle-lower part of the glacier, there are a couple of steep chutes that branch off down skiers left and seem like the most likely place to have features you would not want to fall into. We generally have not gone down those but rather traversed somewhat right, sometimes then a short carry over rocks, to the last and mellower run down into the bottom.
This year a bonus is much less dry walking to the Sholes for this late in the season. Instead of taking the summer trail around to the S of Coleman Pinnacle, if you skin up from the N side of CP to the notch that is a couple of thousand feet W of CP (not the notch immediately W of CP, go farther W), there is almost always a good patch to ski back down to the S that intersects the summer trail a short walk from the start of the Sholes.
Hope that helps,
