Anyone been out that way recently? What's the snow to dirt ratio at this point?

If you decide to go Sam, there's a trail that goes up lightning creek to the climbers right of the route shown by Steph, and makes travel quite a bit easier than the link-the-log photo she has. Especially with skis.

Edit: The N Sauk Road reportedly opened ahead of schedule on July 20th. See next posts.

On the westside of GP I see that the USFS is now stating they estimate the North Fork Sauk Road/Road # 49 will be open by mid August, and they warn about extensive windfall and avalanche debris on the trail:

N. Fork Sauk/Road #49 CLOSED at milepost 0 (junction with Mt. Loop) due to ongoing culvert replacement & long term maintenance project. Road expected to be open by mid August. Many windfall trees and avalanche debris on trail. Deep snow before reaching PCT, White pass completely snow covered with no campsites yet melted out  Federal recreation pass required at trailhead.

In May this year they were stating just summer 2012, so it is good to see they are more specific. (I emailed them for a more specific date in May and got a very unhelpful answer.)

You're right! Or rather - it opened today! They must have just updated their site after I looked yesterday afternoon. Here's the current text:

49  Sloan Creek/North Fork Sauk OPEN 7/19/2012  Road opens to July 20.  Gravel  One Lane
