Car served backcountry suggestions was created by Richard_Korry
I'm looking for suggestions to take some kids (ages 6 -> 12) that don't want ski season to be over where we could do some car-assisted skiing. We are thinking Chinook to Cayuse but it's been so long since I've skied that terrain I have no memory if that's nuts for kids that are solid intermediate skiers. The recent (6/13-6/14) TR about Chinook & Cayuse seemed promising assuming we can find an alternative to the snake.

We are open to other ideas for destinations. Thanks

Cayuse an Chinook .
Go counter clockwise around Naches basically following the PCT(summer trail) and ski the east bowl return via the saddle above and ski down to little tipsoo, Hard to beat for scenery and fun for the group you descibe .

Snoqualomie area
Also the tour up from Windy pass into Silver peak basin is coming ripe for car access ,

Paradise
Cowlitz rocks tour - a little longer with huge scenery and easy slopes . Some creek crossing involved .

Another easy tour out of Paradise (Car back to car) skin up To base of Pan point with the Big Kids then Go a little further North to Glacier Vista for Lunch. After lunch ski down below Pan Point to saddle and enter Edith basin down the ramp to east. Hook right and south into Edith basin for return to lodge or repeat any slope your group likes .

Enjoy

Robie: I think he is looking for somewhere to drop skiers off, have them ski down, pick them up in the car and take them back to the start point? No skinning.

Chinook to Cayuse road descents require strong skiing ability (quick turns, no fall, dirty suncup skills) in my opinion. Paradise down to one of the hairpin turns above Longmire is easier terrain, check the topo map. Sometimes Artist Point to Mt Baker ski area parking is skiable, also requires strong skiing ability I think.

I skied a couple of Chinook to Cayuse car laps today and would agree with Silas. Some suncups and depending which way you go...fairly steep fall line. There were 5 of us so by the second lap it was getting skier groomed and the 10 th guy got a nice smooth ride.

I did take my wife down it last year and she is an intermediate and managed it OK so maybe the older kids but probably a bit much for 6 year olds unless they are in the race team.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Yes, I was referring to car-served backcountry turns. A small bit of hiking might be OK.

I was talking to a friend that suggested the north (Yakima) side of Chinook. Any thoughts on that?

Oh I thought the poster meant teaching kids how to skin for turns.

Well Hurricane ridge comes to mind for a car shuttle.

While I'm back on line. I was remiss in my first post of not mentioning backcountry safety.
We still have tree wells , covered creek crossings ,injuries ,avalanche issues and just plain getting lost. This could happen in either car shuttles or skinning on a Tour. Having said that teaching safety to young people  can be as much fun as skiing.
