Old, but effective technique. I just step on roots, run over rocks, brush and it naturally designs a base that breaks water suction.

Pollen?
I've been using a race base wax on my touring skis. It's high melt temperature, very tough, very hard and seems to pick up less pollen, dirt and dust than softer waxes.

My Voile Vector BC's have a pattern on the base that is un-susceptible to the suction affect of wet snow. Its great! When my buddy is bogged down, I glide right by. On the flip side, I'm slower in every other condition.
Seems to glide well on dirty snow too.

I use paraffin most of the time, it seems to work especially well in the spring on warm snow, I also think base structure as discussed above really helps. If I know I will be skiing wet dirty snow I'll usuly take the time to wax scrape and brush my skies, seems to help. Another thing I use that seems to help is adding some of that black glide wax used for spring/wet skating conditions.
