Intro backcountry for a fired up 8th grader was created by TobiasT
Hi All,
I teach middle school and have a student who is fit and rabid to back country ski, but his parents are not particularly interested. Are there any youth-oriented ski programs that get kids in the back country? I'm thinking he should start with an avi I course, but I don't see any organized options options after that.
Thanks,
Tobias

Hey Tobias,
It's not exactly what you're looking for, but one option for him to look into is the Yuki Award program, if he's interested in "sharing the love" after his class. Take a look here:

Where does this kid live? I know of a local guide service that has taken middle school aged kids out before, but i'm not sure if that's what you were asking about... taking him yourself isn't an option I assume?
If he started skiing now, he could just start skiing before the avalanche course and get all of his systems figured out.

Seems like there was some sort of backcountry awareness workshop for youths going on around Snoqualmie for a while there within the last year or two. A foundation of some type if I recall....
Anyone know more about that?

This one?
David Pettigrew Foundation
I don't know much about it, beyond that they do good work. Silas may know more.
