Cowlitz Chimneys from the East? was created by blackdog102395
Has anyone accessed the Cowlitz Chimneys from the east using the Owyhigh trail and then bushwacking up Needle Creek?  Thinking this might be a cool variation rather than accessing via White River and the Summerland trail.  Thoughts?

Yeah, it's a good trip. The crossing of Chinook creek can be sketchy; have a shovel if you need to cut steps down to the log crossing. Cross Kotsuck when you get above the falls and there really isn't any shwacking this time of year with the snow coverage all the way up into Needle Creek Basin.

You do put yourself in a bit of exposure if you plan to ascend the chimneys from that direction. I would get a good look at the cornices that protect that area first and some rock fall can be an issue too. If you plan to attack the Chimneys I think the longer walk is a safer bet. Just my 2 cents. If you go that way try the chute on Double Peak.

Thanks for the info and words of caution.  One of the reasons for this approach is to get a good look at Double.  Nice to hear it's worth checking out.
