BD - Drift- why so little chatter? was created by hellojello74
I guess my main reason for looking at the drift is 100 at waste and relatively light, that said there are some other good options in that size but not quite as light. I have tried to look all over for some good info on these and there is relatively little, the wild snow review pretty much.

I was am looking for a spring skiing ski and something to do longer tours with, after using my heavy setup something lighter is definitely needed.
145lb
5-11
living in sea

Currently skiing the color wheel SFB (10/11?) in a 185 at 115 under waist with barrons as my daily driver, Pretty aggressive skier, comfortable most anywhere but big cliffs, last ski was a 175 4frnt vct 08? have been slowly getting in to touring bought some Dynafit TLT and some BD primes, I plan on setting up an adapter plate similar to

www.tetongravity.com/forums/s...=adapter+plate

So that I can run the SFB on good deeper days and use the Drifts for more spring type days.
I was originally looking for a 90-100ish underfoot and around 7lb and the drift kept falling into the category, but having never skied them I wasn't so sure, I have been flip floping back and forth between the 175 and the 185, for weight savings and ease of skiing spring snow or the 185 to charge more. The last 175 ski was mid mounted so not the greatest comparison but it always felt a little short, I feel as though I can drive my 185's but wouldn't go any bigger as I feel sometimes they are almost to big. I really don't need the float of the bigger ski as I always stay on top being on the lighter side...

Anyways I guess I am asking if the Drifts are a good fit for me or if I should look elsewhere? should I go for the weight savings of the 175 or just go with the 185.... (its like a pound)

I havent seen many people with them either so is it me or they just not popular or not popular with the crowds I see or are they just not a good ski?

Thanks for your help

I was looking at the Drift a couple of years ago for similar reasons. The reviews I read implied that it is a bit of a dud for skiing. I decided to add a little weight and go with the Coombacks and I could not be happier. I think they ski well in everything and they are not much heavier than the Drift if I remember correctly.

Because it's an unremarkable ski in a crowded category. I'm sure there are people who swear by it, but that's true of almost any ski. I've heard it described as a "decent soft snow ski for an intermediate" several times. If that's your gig, go for it.

After shopping deals this spring my wife ended up with the BD Starlet (Women's Drift) and I ended up with the 175 BD Justice. We are both really happy (yesterday we found fat modern skis really nice seeking out the pockets of powder between crust and slop on lichtenburgh) but the Starlet is definitely more of a "lots of short turns" ski which may not suit everyones style. I was leaning towards the drifts for the reasons you describe but a friend (who tried them mounted telly) described them as too hooky and I ended up finding a deal on the Justices which I've found capable, stable and light (dynafits + g3 skins help) on the two spiring tours and one crusty day inbounds I've had them out on so far.

Steve Romeo (RIP) at tetonat.com has some great comparisons of BD Skis though not so much vs other brands as he was sponsored. I don't think he ever posted a full review of the drift but if you do a google search for "site:tetonat.com drift" and scan through the first few pages you will find lots of comments on where he felt the drift fit in his quiver...he seemed to think they were a really versatile ski mountaineering ski.

I like my K2 Backups, pretty light, metal layer keeps them from getting tossed. Only time I didn't like them was an Alpental day with thigh deep powder.

Really cheap deals around the net too.

I've had my Drift's for over a year now and I like them in both powder and spring conditions. They are stable and predictable, float well and stiff enough to hold an edge on more compact snow. I find them easy to get on edge. The only downside is the base. I was having to hot wax after every trip until the tech at Pro Ski suggested I hotbox them. End of problem. Now I wax after 3-4 trips.
FWIW: I'm 6', 175# and at 62yrs am not into skiing fast. I prefer a ski that is light and turns easily.
The Drifts fill that bill well.
