Is it Data or is it art?

Wind Map   Data with some utility (near term forecast) or just more ephemeral art?  Kind of cool either way..

I find it fascinating to watch.

I wondered about the obvious weather system in the south-central plains, then saw elsewhere that a "tornado emergency" had just been declared in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. They're not just lines on a map.

Last week, Letty and I were chatting about the early days and she expressed how fine it was to have North Dakota in the rear view mirror given that either snow or dirt was constantly on the move so she set out to prove it and dug this thing up..   On that day (and mostly since) it showed a ripper in ND, but what held my attention was the graceful depiction of what is otherwise invisible.

The living map was produced by a couple of talented guys, Fernanda Viegas and Martin Wattenberg , with data from the NWS' National Digital Forecast Database which also contains data for predicted snowfall amounts..  Anybody up for producing an animation of that?   

just thought it might be interesting to bring this back up tonight.
