May have a relocation opportunity to Juneau, wondering how the backcountry access is, opinions on Eaglecrest and the town/lifestyle in general. Thanks

Yes I have skied the local ski hill..very low elevation....rainy, foggy....but it can be good just not very often.
There are touring possibilities especially if you have moneyfor heli or skiplane access.

There is a good outdoor store there that sells AT gear and owners are tourers and would have a lot of information. There appears to be an active group of BC Skiers from the conversations I have had with them. Its called Foggy Mountain Shop which really sums it up.
I've called them and talked to them about local touring and they have always been helpful.
See here.

Juneau itself....compared to some of the SE AK towns, its pretty good BUT it is a small town and you get "island fever" after a while. I've spent quite a bit of time there on business and always enjoy it...but in small measures. The main town cener is to be avoided in tourist season when all the cruise ships are in.. a square mile of fat waddling tourists buying fake Alaskan kisch and trinkets...horrible.

Town is also full of Government bureaucrats( it's the capital) and they are nice folks but still have that bureaucratic frame of mind if you know what I mean( ;) ;). During session it's full of politicos and the bar scene can be quite fun as you hobnob with drunken lobbyists and corrupt local politicians.

Drugs are readily available both pot and cocaine and meth can be bought on any street corner and alcoholism is endemic.

Bring your own woman....there's a line and waiting list for the few that are locally available.
Good luck ;D

Regarding the fairer sex: in Alaska, you don't ever lose your woman, you just lose your turn...
