I'm going to be testing several beacons that I didn't have a chance to really work with before (Ortovox S1, newest Pulse with 3.2 firmware, older Pulse, etc) in multiple burial scenarios with couple of them at close proximity case. I will do the comparison and write up my observations if I notice anything that sticks out.
Assuming that a searcher applies standard procedures (primary search, secondary search, discovering multiples, moving into "modified primary method" ) most common mistake is moving to fast in close proximity to multiple victims. "Machine" needs time to think. Overlaping signals can cause delays of up to 3 seconds, and if you move (or move the orientation of the beacon) at that time it could be even longer. That itself could seem like a huge amount of time yet the same tool can help you a lot in telling how many "victims are buried, and point you in relative directions (along the flux line) . I do Know that beacons will often lock in on relatively further beacon because of "coupling" - relative positioning of transmitting antenna to receiving one (even if you have a 3 antenna beacon) Anyhow, I'll chime back if I notice something funny. I've only had the issue with the older analog transceivers, but yes it could happen with any old beacon that has drifted. I've tried it with Trackers of the same age, and haven't had any problem. What I was experiencing is likely caused by a
continuous background signal
that is most common to the older analog beacons.
