Thanks for the comments all, especially the lengthy comment and video from Scotsman. I'm still on the fence about buying an airbag pack, but its seems like the overall opinion (at least among those who commented) was pro-airbag. I suppose I need to do a bit more research.

Sunday's events brought to the forefront more options for safer travel in the back country. I do not anticipate buying one as I am planning an abstinence approach for my immediate future. This came about as my mother called less than 3 hours after Sunday's tragedy and air bag survival, she lives in another state. I am in my 40's, my mother calling in fear brought me up short, my step-father spoke on the phone and he was so appreciative that I called back so quickly about 4pm. They informed me of the events at Steven's and Alpental as I was at Baker in bounds. I've thought a lot about Sunday, airbags and all. I've thought most about how my family is impacted even when I am not.
Thanks for the question Andrew:).

I have an ABS airbag and I use it occasionally when I tour without my wife.

Touring with my wife definitely makes for a more conservative trip, and it's not that she can't ski - she is just more risk-averse... Right now, if we both go, I try to get her to use the ABS, or we don't take it at all. The second is more likely. When we are together, I believe we have a higher responsibility to go super safe, in places where there is virtually no need for an airbag.

I am considering purchasing another one, so that both my wife and I can have airbags when we tour together - but that's probably a bad idea, because it may increase her risk-tolerance and expose us more.

Cheers
Ivo

Probably won't buy one...beacon, probe and shovel are expensive (and heavy) enough. Cost vs. benefit doesn't pan out for me. The recent events and media frenzy were a great commercial for them, though!

I just bought one.   I'd been thinking about it anyway, but the purchase was also prompted by the fear of my family over my skiing.  My mom and sister think airbags are magic and once I told them I'd made the purchase they both sighed as if everything will now be okay.  That relief is worth the price.  I feel almost like it was a present to my mom.   I also just reviewed my life insurance and applied for additional coverage.   I'm also reconsidering my non-releasable G3 tele bindings.
