Are there trace on topo programs?

Complete "Internet for Dummies" question: Are there sites/programs where you can "trace" a prospective route on the topo map to get an estimated distance & elevation, like Google Maps for BC travel?

National Geographic TOPO! software lets you draw a route and get distance and elevation info, print custom maps, and upload waypoints to a GPS.

Hillmap! Hillmap rocks. You can put waypoints on there and it gives you a profile with X=distance and Y=elevation. Once you are done you save, and you can paste that URL and send it to other people, who can now see that very same waypoint set.

I second Hillmap. If you want to draw a route to import to your GPS for field use, Hillmap lets you export that as a track (vs route) so the connecting line shows up on your GPS screen, extremely helpful IMO. If you want to view your track on a topo map you can import your GPX file into Hillmap and see exactly how you did... as well as share all this info via email. The developer has done an excellent job building this application up, its now my primary mapping application.
