Anyone know of a business or person who does backpack alterations, modifications in the Portland area? REI lists a company but you have to mail your pack to them but I want a local resource of possible.

I doubt they do modifications, but isn't Cilogear in Portland? You could give them a buzz and see if they have a recommendation. Or, better yet, maybe they do custom work on the side?

the only place I know is Johann's located in Tigard.
He started his business as a mountaineering guide and sewing and altering mountaineering packs, gear etc. I stopped in his shop (house) once long ago to inquire about a broken zipper on my north face bag and he gave me an honest estimate the repair would more than the bag worth, on his advice I sewed the broken end closed myself and kept on using it. I can appreciate that kind of advice. Plus he's full of mountaineering history and has many historical items to talk about IIRC like a mini museum.
