Description
Need a little extra motivation to head to the hills? After tonight you’ll look for ways to never leave them!
John has photographed mountains and glaciers from the air for the past nine years and he’ll show a selection of his favorite images and share the stories behind them. Enjoy stunning views of the places we usually see only from the vantage point of our skis: the North Cascades, the Cascade Range in Washington and Oregon, the southern Coast Mountains of British Columbia, the Rockies of Canada and the US, the Columbia/Purcell mountains of BC and the Coast Mountains of Northwest British Columbia/Southeast Alaska. The plane he uses on these excursions? One he built himself from a kit!
Since 2007, John has been involved in a project to photograph every glacier in the lower 48 states, in cooperation with a glaciologist at Portland State University. He’s also photographed in cooperation with researchers at the USGS, Western Washington University and the University of Washington. And he’s collaborated with North Cascades National Park and North Cascades Institute, as well as organizations such as The Wilderness Society and the Skagit and Whatcom Land Trusts.
John’s photographs have appeared in various books and in publications such as Alpinist, Climbing, Skiing, Ski Journal, American Alpine Journal and Canadian Alpine Journal. His first book, Snow and Spire: Flights to Winter in the North Cascade Range, was published in November.
The North Cascades are 11,000 square miles of nearly impenetrable mountains. They are America s last redoubt of true adventure. Cut with few roads and even fewer towns, and guarded by 700 glaciers and horrendous weather, the rugged North Cascades remain relatively unknown to most climbers. In winter, when the range is buried beneath up to 50 feet of snow, it is seen by even fewer still. Here, in this remarkable book of aerial photographs, John Scurlock conveys the majesty and mystery of this incredible range that for the rest of us would otherwise go as unseen as the dark side of the moon. ~ Duane Raleigh, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Rock and Ice Magazine
Enter to win a copy of Snow & Spire at the program. Copies will also be available for sale and John will sign them afterward.
