Brian,
I suck at skiing, so bad that I have difficulty with blues. But I'm from Texas and just got into skiing this year, so that's to be expected. I wanted to do a little Touring myself this year, and I flew to WA, drove to Paradise and skinned up to Muir in June.
There's tons of snow coverage up there, the snow was pretty good and it's very open. Granted it took me about 2 hours to go from Muir to Paradise (I could have done it faster walking down) but I did learn from it, and it's about as safe as youc an get if you stay around the boot path and don't go wondering off tot he glaciers/cliffs.
I leave tomorrow to go to CO for an 8 day ski trip and should come back honed in on my skills and be a fully awesome skier! (We'll see)
I recommend the Paradise area for some fun turns. Just be cautious of Avy Danger on the steeper slopes in the area, but if you stick to the main trail(s) and off pan face, most of the skiing there is low grade, and not very prone to avalanches. Find some buddies who want to do this, go with them. Learn from them, get the knowledge and adventure out into your comfort zone!

I'm mostly a whitewater boater, so I'm down with the, er, "higher efficiency" options recommended. only so much capacity on those multiday trips!
I'd be glad to trade some river time for some snow time if that interests anyone. Winter is prime river season here. Once this silly dry spell ends, anyway. Pray for Rain!
I keep getting outbid on bindings dangit. maybe I'll just have to deal with some alpine wrekkers while I'm putting together the real kit.
But indeed, I do recognize the generosity of the offers. Thanks, and I look forward to the chance to learn from you guys. I'll go scope summit east for sure in the mean time. And do my book larnin' so I have at least some basics down. I fully respect snow. As a boater I know how powerful water is, whatever its form may be.

As important as your skills, where to go and the equipment on your feet is your clothing. Breathable, windproof, vented, water resistant/proof coat and pant are vital as well. Newcomers to the sport don't realize how much heat they are going to generate moving on the trail and put on to many layers or wear an insulated stuff only to find they are dripping in sweat 30 minutes later.
Here are some good discussions on clothing and the key ingredients for your pack.
Good luck!

Get good, properly fitting boots....
preferably from a real shop that knows how to fit boots, not like REI or online w/o trying.
BTW Hyak is super easy & never-ever/beginner friendly (that main area w/ the water tower is, anyway)
work on your off-piste downhill
become a cardiowhore to make life easier for yourself on the uphill
take avy1 or at least some sort of freebie seminar.
