Hood tours? was created by trees4me
Heading down fpr portland wedding this weekend and it sounds like timberline is running. Anyone have beta on their policy towards bc skiers? Do people cross over to zigzag from the lodge or up higher?
Never been to t-line, so I'm looking for advice on early season touring when the lifts are spinning. It looks like meadows is a bit thin still, so t-line seems like the best choice for this weekend... ???

i can't comment on the conditions, but NOAA says we're expecting snow all weekend

I've been up there spring, summer and early fall--and not for a couple of years, so take this with a grain of salt. There has always seemed to be an official policy (No accessing backcountry via the ski area) and an actual enforced policy (don't be a jerk and you can pretty much do as you please). That means if you're skinning uphill, stay well out of the way of downhill skiers, preferably off the groomers...which you probably want to do for your own reasons anyway. If bootpacking, don't do it where you'll trash groomed surfaces going uphill or down. And if you pay for a lift ticket, be somewhat surreptitious about cutting across towards Illumination Rock/ZigZag Glacier from the top of the Palmer Lift.
Since you're unfamiliar with the area, be aware that fall line descents will take you far from the ski area into areas of wandering canyons, steep trees, meadows, etc. Bear sharply toward skiers' left if you ever intend to see your car again.
Hope that's helpful.

I skinned past the upper lodge this past Sunday. No one said a word to us. I know you can purchase a one-time lift ticket for the magic mile. From what I gather on Timberline's website, you can go backcountry as long as you adhere to their rules and use the gates to access. I think meadows is a little bit stricter and prohibits uphill traffic. Anyways, I didn't see any ropes or a gate setup this past weekend. I don't think you will have any problems. Just bring a pair of crampons. It was icy and lots of exposed rocks.
