We're going. Bad news is it's in January. What's to do then, snowise...? The fly rods are going, but what about the skis? tx

I was in Chile a year ago January. I saw some skiable snow scattered here and there. I even got snowed upon once or twice--once right at sea level. But Chile's huge--4500 km long, from Tierra del Fuego to the tropics--and includes temperate rainforests, huge icecaps, maritime mountains, the world's driest deserts, endless dusty steppes, ridiculously large but astonishingly barren volcanoes....and much more. You might stand a better chance of attracting useful answers if you stated where you're actually going.

You might also say something about how far you're willing to walk in search of skiing. And what kind of skiing you're willing to walk for. And then you'll still have to take your best guess as to what sort of snow season they'll get, and what sort of summer melting: like the Cascades, summer snow can vary from sparse to plentiful, depending. If determined, you'll find skiing somewhere or other: January is the functional equivalent of July, and the southern Andes are quite similar to the Cascades or Coast Range, so if you routinely ski here in July you'll manage just fine.

Hope that's helpful, somehow.

Mark

thanks, Mark, you're right, of course, there's probably no place on the globe with such a range of both latitude and elevation fetch. but, since the commitment to go has been made, on other grounds, it is merely a matter of connecting the dots, once in the region. not expecting to walk out the hotel into thigh deep..

business for a while in concepcion, but before, expect to be in coihaique for a week of flyfishing. i reckon sliding opportunities may be best down there, or even further.

up here we all have a sense of what's doable mid-summer, and just wondering what the reciprocal is down there..

thanks
