Thanks again for the great information and sound advice! We're looking forward to getting out there at some point – and also taking a glacier travel and crevasse rescue course.

As for training, here's a good one that happens once a year each spring, approximately the same dates as this last one:
Mountaineers Glacier Skiing/Snowboarding & Crevasse Rescue
And an INTRO VIDEO to that course which Jerry White (JW on TAY) put together. The course is lead by Darryl Olson (Darryl on TAY).
The glacier course is required to graduate from the Mountaineers Ski Mountaineering Course (also intro viddy) , which Jerry leads.
Lots of TAY brothers and sisters help with these courses – it’s a rather nepotistic group
Of course if you are looking for the very best in high quality training on dates that fit your own schedule you'd likely be hard pressed to find anyone better than the folks at PRO GUIDING to train you. Lots of folks turn to Martin to get squared away fast for safe backcountry travel.

We're new to the sport as well and went with Pro Guiding for a custom 5-day ski mountaineering course to learn all about skiing on glaciers. Here's my write-up of the trip
Learning Ski Mountaineering on Mount Baker’s Coleman Deming Route
.
And thanks for all the tips for skiing on Rainier! I hit the snowfield this weekend for the first time and am looking forward to exploring some of the options above.
