Hi, looking for any backcountry-specific Hokkaido advice that you might have to offer. We are a small group of very experienced ski tourer folks that want to experience what is really special and unique about skiing in Japan -- and there is simply too much information on the web for me to figure out how to make a good, informed choice...I'm feeling overwhelmed by the options and I am looking for some specific advice from you folks who may have explored Japanese backcountry skiing already. Many thanks.

Specifically:
1. Planning late Dec. 2011; is that too early for consistent snow conditions?
2. Want suggestions for places to base ourselves out of (fun places to stay where we can access BC from for mostly day trips). Looking for a variety of terrain, 6000-10,000 vert. per day and we're happy skiing anything from fun, hippy powder to steep, imposing lines.
3. Any logistical advice would be welcome (e.g. take this train to this place vs. you should rent a car)
4. Any suggestions for how to be semi-frugal in a very expensive place would also be welcome

Have a look at this blog.
This guy spent a season on Hokkaido, there's 19 episodes so you might find something useful.

Additionally, although frowned on by some TAYers, TGR forums really is the depository of all skiing knowledge  in the universe if you can put up with some of the juvenile delinquents and high jinks.

Here's a thread that has a lot of Hokkaido info and Mike Pow is the resident expert and I'm sure would answer many specific questions if contacted by PM.

Been to Japan skiing once ( to Hakuba) and it was unforgettable but I'm going to Hokkiado next time.
