Base cleaner can be purchased at most ski shops or just about any citrus cleaner works well.
Here is a nice site about ski tuning, refer to the waxing section, there are several options on waxing.

Nice, through happenstance, meeting you yesterday. Peter, too.
My skis, too, are black despite me and Maria stopping well short of your final destination.

WD-40 works as cleaner as well -- if you prefer the low-tech dirtbag approach. Hot waxing with excessive amounts of cheap wax, scraping and waxing again with good wax also works well.
A graphite containing wax like "TOKO MOLYBDENUM WAX"
tognar.com/toko_wax_waxes_waxing_ski_snowboard.html#TOK-9326
may help reduce the rate at which tree gunk accumulates on your bases.
