GPS software options

I've used the Above the Timber mapset with my Garmin 60CSx, but have found and prefer this one from Switchbacks.com:

www.switchbacks.com/nwtopos/

This is locally created, donationware, is frequently updated, and includes a Mac based distribution.

Heres a post from Cascadeclimbers.  All for free and a pretty easy interface with google earth.
Free 24k topo maps

Has anyone tried following these steps to test the contradiction between the cascadeclimbers' instructions and Garmin's website?

Garmin's website says:
WARNING: This software will not work unless you already own a MapSource product.

Several years ago, I purchased and installed MapSource which leads me to believe Garmin's website is accurate.

I think those steps work to circumvent Garmin's restriction on MapSource, i.e.

I didn't have MapSource yet after putting a new Win7, and never needed a licensed copy.
