A partial legal definition of accident:
"such a happening resulting in injury that is in no way the fault of the injured person"
Whatever happened to the word incident to describe these situations?
Chuck C, my rant is not pointed at the title of this thread, but the description and tone POWDER Magazine uses-- as if skiing towards a terrain trap on a windloaded, 38 degree-ish slope on a high avalanche rated day and causing a slide is just accidental--so carry on, but be aware that accidents will happen... and offer content for our publication. So get out there and be sure to report back we'd love to feature you in full color. "Break A Leg"

Totally agree with you. I think the tone the site took isn't productive. I'm pretty inexperienced in judging snow stability issues but just looking at the pictures and reading the weather report made me think these guys were nuts regardless of their skill level.
Maybe rather than "accident" I should have used "on purpose".

Thanks for posting this Chuck, and for offering your assessment Jibber. To criticise (Webster definition: to consider the merits and demerits of and judge accordingly) is not usually welcomed in this format. But you're probably off the hook since the incident a) happened in Colorado, and b) happened to someone outside of this community.
My take away from this incident is that 'sluff management' in cold Alaskan snows can in no way be compared to the difficulties of trying to ski out of wet, mid latitude, sun warmed, avalanching snow - whether that moving blanket is 2" or 2' thick. It just takes our skis and limbs and bends and breaks them, or cruisinarts us through the rocks and trees.

Funny thing that luck/skill balance is, eh?
