skinning up at stevens was created by Treehugger
I am planning on skinning up at Stevens this weekend with my dog and skiing in bounds. Avy control is through but it should be safe Saturday with not much new snow recently. Does anyone see anything wrong with doing it this soon after it's closed?

People skin up during hours when they are open for business so I doubt they will mind you being there. At some point there will be snowmobiles buzzing around. It is NFS land and the PCT goes through there so....

In any case, even though they are closed, they do hold some after season events. Not sure if they have completed that at this time. Also, last year there was evidence that they were setting up some features for photo shoots at the top of Showcase, so be aware that the place is not abandoned. But that does not mean that you cannot be there.

I would beware of any assumption that avalanche risk is low at the moment throughout the area. Cowboy Ridge is loaded with stuff which is apt to come tumbling down on the first warm days.

X2

I watched and felt the shock of a very large slide come off the cliffs above while skinning up Skid Road last year around MAY 14th. Not sure about Stevens, but there has been new snow at Snoqualmie in the past week.

I haven't had any problems skinning after season close last year.

x3 on the avy beware: at the time, I started some sluffs on Double Diamond

I skinned up to 7th Heaven with my dog and didn't have any problems. There was some trail maintenance going on, lots of snowmobiles heard in the distance, and the Seattle Mountaineers Club on a field trip. Got fresh tracks all the way down to Hogsback and found some decent snow from there. The snow was actually very enjoyable up at the top and the sunshine was amazing. I was able to kick off some sluff balls but no instability otherwise.
