This from the NWS today shouldn't come as too much of a surprise:
"ITS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE THAT BY THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK SOME LOCATIONS WILL SURPASS THEIR MONTHLY NORMAL RAINFALL TOTAL FOR APRIL."
Porn is looking a lot more likely than corn this spring.

Actually, it doesn't look as bad as it did earlier. The CPC updated their forecasts to reflect the fact that La Nina has been weakening the past two weeks. If we can just get through April, we should be OK.
This is a great link with a Power Point presentation that shows current forecasts and historic La Ninas and El Ninos. It is the best I've seen.

That link provides a nice summary - thanks Gary. Is there inherently some lag to La Nina effects on the PNW? Seems like when the Pacific cooling was at its strongest this winter, we weren't getting much active weather, and now that the temperature indicators are on the wane, we're getting the good stuff.

I don't know if I'd call April snowfall the good stuff....I think that in the middle of the winter we dug too deep a trough offshore. That seems to be happening more mid-winter in the most recent decade than it did previous to 2000.
Regardless, what you see (or don't see) is what you get. The 6 to 10 day outlook is not too hot literally but the 8 to 14 day outlook looks colder and wetter still (more like what we just went through than the somewhat more benign weather this coming week).

My view is we are just postponing the inevitable. When the freezing levels do finally go up we'll be up to our earlobes in the good stuff. I always like to see snowfalls gradually taper off as spring progresses, as a little bit of heavy snow is a lot better than a lot of heavy snow. But then what I like probably has nothing to do with it.
