Hi folks-

Last week I was scouting out potential skiing routes from the tour of least resistance (Cone Peak) at Tombstone Pass.  When I got back to my car, somebody had started a skin track up the steep west end of Browder Ridge starting at the Tombstone snow park.  That got me curious.

Browder Ridge is a prominent and broad ridge which must have several good access points from the north on Hiway 20 and maybe even from the east on Hiway 126.  Does anyone know of some good tours?

What about Echo Peak?  Any knowledge willing to share?

Thanks, JJS

Never been on Browder, but I hear there are some good short steep lines up there. Touring out to Cone and Iron mountains are my usual spots, with longer trips out to South and Echo providing good options as well. We did South Peak earlier this year with an overnight at the saddle and it proved to be a good time. The northside of the whole complex has some pretty gnarly lines.

Here's an update:

My curiosity couldn't wait any longer.  On April 17 I reconned the west end of Browder Ridge from the Tombstone Pass parking lot with my snowshoes.  I followed a very old skin track that went immediately into the woods (did not follow the road).  A few hundred yards in I found some good places for short steep turns (maybe 1000 ft vert).

My skiing predecessor (and so I) took the obvious gully which goes to a notch about half way up the west end of the ridge.  From the notch, views south and west can be seen).  I think the only way further up is to traverse under the huge cliff to the west of the notch.  When the cliff ends, there is a very steep (maybe 40 deg +) 100 ft snow loaded slope that ascends to the much less steeper ridge top.  Up that slope I went and I found the skin track again where the skier decided to go down from there.

I found many favorable tree chutes and some were generously sized.  There are many cliffs of various sizes so don't go blindly.  It was north facing and held plenty of the snow.

If it is the same guy... he told a buddy and I to bring a rappel rope and to watch out for the no-fall-zones on that W. side of Browder.

Second the above plus the addition of Echo Basin.
