Yeah, a number of folks in my party when to Geneva or other places in hopes of an early return. Once I had my new flights, I decided to stay in Zermatt. Why hang out in the airport or city when you can be in Zermatt and ski?

The owner of the City Hotel Garni (also a guide) was so kind to let me stay the extra week. In fact, while hotel rates shot up in most cities, he cut mine in half because I was stuck! If you are in Zermatt, please give them some business since they are nice folks that took care of a stuck traveler.

one more Haute Route question...any tips for how to transfer extra luggage from Chamonix to Zermatt? I saw that there are companies that will drive your luggage to Zermatt...for over $500 US.

Is anyone aware of a cheaper option (other than trying to pool your gear with other people to save on the transport cost)? For example, I did hear a rumor that you can drop off extra luggage at a train station near Chamonix and then have it held at the Zermatt train station, is anyone familiar with the details of this possibility?

We just had our gear transported and sucked up the cost. I believe it was 350 swiss francs if I remember correctly. Not sure about the train station thing.

PGS had our stuff at the hotel when we got there. He must have some local connections. Perhaps give them a call and see if you could leverage their system
