Avy Probe ready to go? was created by Joedabaker
It is not that often that I need to use my avy probe.
I usually carry it in my pack in the sleeve that the probe comes in.
Last week when we were searching for Melby I needed to use the probe in tree wells. I went to pull it out of the sleeve and it got all tangled in the string that tightens the top of its carry sack. It took me a good 5 minutes to undo the mess.
I was thinking that I will never carry the probe in the sack in my pack because that extra 5 minutes could save a life.
Just throwing that out there as a tip for those who, like me, have not figured that out until now.

Hmm, my BD probe bag has a velcro top. The black pull cord for the probe hangs out of the top of the bag and it's a pretty seamless grab, pull out, extend probe process. Maybe they changed the design for the reason you mentioned.

This is a good tip. I recently practiced beacon search using my probe.... my problem was I have one of those BCA shovels with the probe that stashed in the handle.... no more. this proved to waste too much valuable time, as well as compromised the little handle clip that must be removed to get to the probe inside the handle, then replaced in order to use the handle... I also will be buying a longer dedicated probe.
I like the tip of not using the probe sack. I just threw a rubber band around mine.

I've always taken the probe out of the sack but never really had any proof if it helped or not. i could get it out of the bag just fine in practice but worried what happened to you, joe, would happen to me in a real situation. luckily my back (a dakine) has a "sleeve" for the probe to go in so it is still nicely organized in my pack. I do have a strict nothing in the shovel area but shovel and probe rule for my pack just for added security as well.
Kind of glad to hear my thoughts actually made sense since you did have trouble with it getting tangled.

I leave the pouch at home and store mine in the shovel pocket so I can grab the end and pull the whole smash out pretty quick-like. Thankfully not yet had to.

I'm a "no sack" guy too.
Just pull it, sling it and yank the cable to pull the segments together. Takes about three seconds.
