What does "joch" mean? was created by runningclouds
Google translates it as "ridge" but on the Austrian maps it seems to mark the cols. Any insight?

Odd... from
www.unc.edu/~rowlett/units/dictJ.html
:
a traditional unit of area in German speaking countries, especially in Austria. One joch is the area of a square 40 klafters (about 83 yards) on a side. This comes to 0.5755 hectare or about 1.422 acres. The plural is joche. Joch is also the word for a yoke in German, so this unit represents an area that could be plowed in a day by a yoke of oxen. In what is now the Czech Republic this unit was known as the jitro; in Croatia it is the jutro.

Thanks Marcus, I found that one too, I am sure it is right but it does not make any sense for what I am seeing on the map.
It seems that "joch" does mean "col" however in some places it denotes what definitely is not a col, more like a pass but then they do use the term "pass" as well.

Yep, col or saddle in the mountaineering context.
Here's a link to my favorite German/English translation site . I lived in Germany for two years and basically lived on this site-- still have it saved in my IE favorites.
