breakable crust - ski/ski tune question

Maybe I just need to find a different ski (any suggestions of ski with relatively similar dimensions/weight appreciated) or I just deal with it for now and make the best of it.

How about going back to one of the skis you mentioned previously and skiing 20 percent faster?

Hey everyone, thanks for the help/insight/info.  I should have said that I actually do know how to ski breakable crust and do my best to stay on form and ski fast.  I’m sure the ski has some limitations but it’s has to come back to the skier (me).  Like you said Scotsman, experts can rally in crust and variable conditions on almost any type of gear.  In the near term I’ll try the detune you guys mention and step up my game.

But I’d ideally like to find an all around ski that is 90 or less in the middle with a longer turn radius than the shuksan (any suggestions appreciated).  The kailas is a good example and I almost bought a pair last year and kind of wished I did.  It won’t lay down an edge on the super firm/ice like the shuksan but is pretty darn versatile.  The kailas I skied on previously were on loan and I had to give them back.  I still have the anti-pistes (the ones with tip rocker) but they are 188cm long and I don’t really like hauling them around too much using human power – even if I did put dynafits on them (plus I’d have to buy new crampons).

BTW, Randy, like your tip rise mod.  Pretty cool.  The shuksan has a couple sheets of metal so I guess it wouldn’t work.  Although, I might still be tempted to try it..so I’ll ask, what happens when you do your mod when the ski has metal in it?  Irreparable damage?  That might be kind of fun and a good way for the shuksans to go out in style (assuming I find a good replacement).

IMO-I have gotten to the point that I think the best way to ski breakable crust is a series of kick turns and glide like making a downhill skintrack. Less chance of pulling something and making it possible to ski another day. ;)

Geriatrics ski almost all troublesome snow that way.
(Don't ask me how I know ::))

*Some* geriatrics ski troublesome snow (including crust) using telemark step turns. Of course, I know this mainly by observation, not personal experience.
