Winter Tent Waterproofing tricks anyone? was created by cornRIDE
my three year old MH Kiva is an awesome shelter and fits the bill perfectly. from sleeping in it on tour on cali beaches with my band to burly winds at lunch counter in the spring.
I crushed my centerpole and had to order a new one and it led me to doing a easy overhaul of sewing a few spots that the guy lines attach at. I'd like to 're-waterproof' it too, just as a preventative measure, does anyone have any 'tricks' they'd care to share?
I found this site which is helpful: www.midtown.net/dragonwing/waterproofing.htm
does anyone have first hand experience with the nikwax or aqua armor?
let it be known that I'm not looking for a miracle. thanks in advance...

I used Nikwax to re-waterproof the rain fly of my NorthFace Mountain tent quite successfully. I set the tent up in the yard, washed it, let it dry in sun, and then applied nikwax with a sponge. It isn't the same as the waterproofing from the factory, but it's cheaper than spending $500 on a replacement tent. Just make sure to get enough nikwax to do the entire fly (two bottles to be safe).

That is a good link you have. I've used CampKote on this monstrosity with success, applied with a garden sprayer. I recharge once a season. This is mil-surp parachute silk so it is a worst case scenario. The Kote will fend off heavy rain, but my use has mostly been in drizzly or frozen precip. weather in winter/spring.

More details on that tent! What poles are you using? Are they from another tent?

Don't mean to jack a good thread. I posted details on ttips. I'll link it when I get a chance to search for it. It's a parachute and the centerpole is a Radio Shack antenna mast or sectional aluminum pole from a Kifaru tipi. I used a PVC pole the summer I made it then when Fall rolled around and the woodstove went in, the PVC pole got a bit wobbly!
