Last night there was a story on Evening Magazine that was in my opinion very irresponsible.  The story is linked here.  tiny.cc/3c50e

While it is certainly a fortunate miracle that the guy survived, the story never even mentions that he was doing all the wrong things in avy terrain.  Traveling alone, no training or equipment (which wouldn't have mattered if he was alone).  While a compelling story, the lesson apparently by watching this is that you should always charge your cell phone when traveling in avalanche terrain!  This is completely irresponsible to present the story in this manner.  Not once do they ever suggest any of the best practices currently available for backcountry travel in avy country.

If you agree that this is an irresponsible story, please send Evening Magazine / King 5 a message suggesting they actually provide information that might help avert such accidents, instead of possibly promoting more of them.

Pretty dopey.  They needed two reporters to mention cell phones a dozen or so times, but only stated that the accident could have been avoided in the last few seconds---with no information about HOW.

There is nothing wrong with skiing alone. I tour close to 100 days a year for the past ten years and the majority are solo.
Less than 25 degrees, low avy conditions tell people when you should be expected back and your exact route and do your best not to put yourself in danger.
Places I have toured alone this year, mt catherne, Kendall stump, lost trail pass montana

Interesting.
They have two of the best av pros in the country on staff, Rich Marriott and Jeff Renner.
I suspect had the run the clip by one of them before it was aired it might have turned out somewhat different.

Replied by ughly skier on topic Re: Irresponsible Evening Magazine Avalanche story
arcticcat2:
The story was presented in such a way that the message was 'good thing he had his cell phone'. There was never any talk about conditions or training or back country knowledge/avalanche awareness.

Going solo has its dangers if you are clueless (like me), not so bad if you're very in the know and use your brain.
