Whistler-Blackcomb has dramatically altered its policy on backcountry access from the ski area to the adjoining Garibaldi Provincial Park. This change can make accessing the park via the W-B lifts quite unpredictable. Go to the avalanche advisory page of W-B's web page: www.whistlerblackcomb.com/weather/advisory/index.htm
The new policy is on the right-hand side of the page.

I saw that notice a month or two ago. Not sure it is that much of a change really. Even before the Symphony lift, Harmony bowl would need to be open for access to occur, ditto with the Peak chair or Harmony lift. Not sure how often Symphony is closed when the rest of the mountain is open. This is part of the perils of incorporating slackcountry into ski area skiing. Lucky for the local, the Duffy is fairly close, as is a lot of both backcountry and sled access skiing.

the question is...do they enforce it? I went through a closed symphony area a year ago and while symphony chair was closed the BC was still officially open.

They do not enforce it as far as I know, but it is a bad idea to sneak in. It is closed because they are doing avalanche control above you, just think about it while you are skinning up there is a bunch of guys ski cutting and throwing charges off Panorama Ridge.

But of course if they are doing avy control there is fresh untracked powder back there. What to do?
Wake up early and skin up Singing Pass trail and beat everyone. Harmony, Peak and Symphony might not open till 10-11 by then you will have at least one run behind you. As a bonus you will save $50 bucks for apre-ski beer.
