I've been thinking recently of organizing a group of folks to practice building and hauling improvised sleds. It's a skill that doesn't get covered in avy classes and we all say we want to practice it, but rarely actually do. I figure if there was a time and date set for practice time, people might actually practice.
So here's my idea:
Location: Crystal, on the hill above the church, like you're headed up to gold hills.
Date: Jan 22
Time: 12:00 or 1:00 till Beer:30

Folks can tour for the morning and then meet up in a central location to play with gear for a few hours.
Bring any sled gear you have or just what you take out on a normal day tour and see if you can rig something. I will have a Brooks Range sled (with bars) and hope to have a drag bag style sled by that time as well.
Also, remember extra puffies and warm drinks.

Please post to let me know if this gains enough traction to actually happen.

Dan

I cant go, but here is a pattern for a sled that Dick Willy and Frank Rossi like.

You'll need a bunch of retired tubular webbing, a tarp, your foam padding, and the lame partner's skis. Maybe you can rework the design and come up with something better.

Thanks. It's cool to see all the ideas out there. To me the trick is to use as little single use gear as possible. You are more likely to carry the gear if it can be used for different purposes.
In this design, I don't know what I would use that much tubular webbing for (other than building a sled), so I would replace it with cordalette that I could also use for cutting cornices and giving quick belays.

If Sunday works better for folks, we could do that too.

Great idea, Dan.
I think I'll be able to make it either day, although Sunday would be my preference.
Might bring a ski partner or two as well.
