good places to tour near winthrop was created by Eli3
Goin over for a few days to hang out, wondering if anyone has suggestions for day tours. I saw some thing about sandy butte being considered as a ski area at some point, is it worth skinning up?

Sandy point: Is that also refered to as "the ranch"?
The easy option: The Loup is closed mid week non holiday, I think.
The in-laws live there, so I've spent some time scouring maps and scratching my head about the possibilities near town. Legend has it that it's a local's paradise with sleds, but not surprisingly, hard for an outsider to get good info for non-assisted day tours.
I'm to the point where just driving up hwy 20 till the Suby gets stuck and looking around is starting to look like a viable option.
Or,...
Book a sled assisted day guided by North Cascades Mountain Guides.
Or,...
For $50 bucks more, a Heli assisted guided day touring with NCH.
There are also smaller peaks near town to yo-yo, but the snowpack is always iffy.
Whatever you find out, please keep in contact, as this is definitely of interest to me.

Sandy Butte is a good tour with 4,000 vertical. A system of roads goes 2/3 of the way up starting at the heli barn. Very likely they've put in a cat track to the top. The terrain is moderate.
Above Mazama, there's Goat Pk (5,000 vf) and Fawn peak (4,500 vf). There are several good, accessible routes on Fawn and it is not often skiied.
Above Lost River, Setting Sun Pk is accessible from the Yellowjacket snomo trail. Another long climb (4,500 vf),
If there's enough snow (I think there is, this year) there are tours possible from the Sun Mtn trail system. These are shorter with less than 2,000 vf. Ask Don at the Sun Mtn ski shop. He knows all.
From Twisp, take a look at Lookout Mtn. It can be reached from the Libby Creek Rd.
There is not such a range of good tours from the Loup. Not nothing but no standouts.
