I have F1s and Comfort bindings. I thought that a shim mounted permanently on my ski that was thick enough to actually work would interfere with ski crampons. So I made my own removable shims by cannibalizing a pair of Dynafit crampons. Since crampons aren't exactly cheap, this was a somewhat pricey solution. But I've been quite happy with it. (At the time I did this I was not aware of commercial shims.)
Here's a detail view of one of the shims:
And here's a shot of the shims installed:
For the shim itself I cut up the plastic blocks that came with the boot. I find that without the shims the F1s feel too soft in downhill mode. The sole flexes but it feels like the ankle is flexing. With the shims in the boots ski fine.

yeah, cut it at the screwdriver. Another reason I cut the plastic is that I use the older style B&D ski crampon which is stronger, like Russ said. I respectfully disagree about the plastic rib adding stiffness. You will see what I mean when you cut it off.
I like Lowell's setup best because the only thing that actually needs to touch the spacer is the one lug on the boot that lines right up with his spacer. And it's removable. And it's light.
I attached a picture of my binding showing the shim I use when I use my F1s, and the slide in shim which I don't use anymore. I epoxy in brass inserts for the spacer, and put SS set screws in the holes when I'm not using my spacers.
