Exactly right, Joe. If you break the rubber thingy you can just undo the velcro and put in another one - it's pretty much the same as Dynafit's second generation Speedskin.

Good timing because I just got a pair of skins for my Dynafit Stokes.
This may be a nice option.
I did weigh out if I wanted to get the mix skins, but chickened out and got the regular ascensions.
Knowing that the skis were wider I thought that my glide would be limited by the regular ascensions. Not that the regular ascensions have great glide ever. My thinking was that the mix skins would have better glide but less climbing grip and the loss of grip would be compensated by the added width of the skis. Maybe too much thinking into that one.  ;)
What would you think?

Added edit**
I also thought that the mohair would get more saturated and maybe collect snow in the PNW.

The difference between the mohair mix and pure nylon skins is not all that dramatic - maybe they glide a little better, maybe they climb a little worse, maybe they absorb a little more water on wet days. In any department, though, it's probably measurable in single digit percentage points. The clincher was that the mohair mix was available in black rather than orange, still the best color for drying your skins at lunch.

Anyone try the new mohair pure Ascensions? I had some of the old pre-Black Diamond ones which had super glide . . .

PS  My French and Swiss friends laugh at talk about how mohair skins don't have enough "grip" - they would say we just need to learn how to skin properly. Sure enough, they never seem to have any problem on steep icy tracks on worn out all-mohair skins, and act like breaking out your ski crampons is for wimps, but then they've been ski touring since they were 8 years old or so . . .

Edited to add: Alex at backcountry.com tells me they are selling two Dynafit tip fixes for $12.95, considerably cheaper than Salewa. They are the newer model, without the beavertail cross-hatching

Good point on drying the skins with black is faster, one would think Dynafit would have incorporated that thinking into their skins.

I agree that technique is what makes skins hold on the slope, also route choice. It is pretty rare that I use ski crampons. Probably won't even buy them for the Stokes.

Thanks for the link on the plugs.
Since the newer model has the slim metal rod it may be more effective (since I don't have a beefy sewing machine) for me to just fold the skin over the rod, and put a hole in the skin and stitch the skin to skin. Since I will have the adjustable tail I can tighten it up from the tails when the skin relaxes during the tour. Then cut the side cut on the skins. If I don't like it the tip plug option, cut the skin and go back to the new adjustable loop.

With all the farting around it would be just better off to have bought the Dynafit skins and called it good. :D

OP: you can use any skins you want.  I  have G-3s (just needed to spread the ears a bit so I could rip them without taking them off; Skins direct and any other skins: use BD large tip loops, buy Dynafit replacements (Less than $10 mgear), or just use climbing cord (I've down this several times, including today on Glide LItes for my & 7 summits).  So no problema!  I still would like to try a pair of Dynafit skins if I could get them for the $36 I paid for my BD Glide Lites.
