Snow tire recommendations was created by jdclimber
My 2005 Golf has finally worn out the dealer installed tires.
I want to buy the best snow tire I can find based on the forecast for the winter and still be able to use them in the summer.
Of course I want something that works well in wet conditions as well as snow.
Any suggestions based on experience?

It's always a compromise. Durability vs. Traction. I've got a V6 Camry, and the Goodyear Eagle GT has been great all year round for me. My wife got some middle of the road tires at Les Schwab for her car and had them siped. Made quite a difference on the snow.

I'm kinda in the same boat. Looking at the Nokian WRG2, which they market as "all-weather". It gets the mountain-snowflake severe snow service symbol, but still has 500 treadwear rating. Anyone here try them? They'd be going on an awd Sienna.
Also tempted by BFG all terrains, which also have the severe snow rating and wear like iron. But the ones on my pickup don't seem so great on on the wet .
If you're looking for dedicated snows, get Nokian Hakkapellitta ... but you can't/shouldn't run them year round if you want to go a second winter on them. I've also talked to guys that really like the Green Diamond retreads (they have carbide "diamonds" embedded in the rubber that act as micro studs)

I just did this exercise for my Jetta. After much shopping I ended up at the Northgate Discount Tire - good service and price - and a set of all season Michelin Pilot Exaltos. With these and chains as back up and w/ front wheel drive I'm good (enough) in the snow and on pavement.

I believe my beloved Escort had studless iPikes. I liked 'em, and was mostly glad to have gone studless, as I kept using them in fresh snow well past the legal cutoff.
